Weekly Update – Criticizing my own work

This week I finished the Artwork for the last Unicorn based on the novel by Peter S. Beagle. I am mostly happy with the result, but I am also my biggest critic. So I thought, I would share my own opinion on my work with you all. First things first, I loved the finished sketch. But one of my biggest nemesis is coloring. I worked for a long time mostly in black and white. I personally would not dare to use bright colors at all. As a result, the color choices I made are all quite deluded. (except for the red bull of course) It’s is not bad but I…

Finding your coloring technique – Art Talk

When I started being interested in art in general, it was kind of an unspoken rule to stick to only one technique within an artwork. Wether its aquarelle, pastel or acrylic. I can’t even remember where it did came from but it just seemed to be the classic rule of ancient artists way back when. So I started of as one influenced by the classic artists. If i used aquarelle, I only used aquarelle, trying to achieve certain looks. But I was never really happy with the result. When I tried acrylics, I started missing the lightness that aquarelle had. When I painted with colored pencils, I missed the opaqueness…

Coloring „The last unicorn“ – Weekly update

This week, I started coloring my previous sketch. The process is going slow and by Sunday I had half of the illustration colored. Hopefully I can finish the illustration this week. I feel like coloring is the hardest part of illustrating because I am super careful with this step. I very happy how the red bull turned out, also Kind Haggard. But Mammy Fortuna is giving me a hard time. I love the color palette but I also think she definitely needs more contrast. I hope the overall coloration will work out the way I want it to be. This is probably the hardest part. I maybe even put a…

The Last Unicorn Artwork – Weekly Update

Last week, I made a Characterdesign of Schmedrick the magician from the Novel „The Last Unicorn“ by Peter S.Beagle. This week, I wanted to create a complete Artwork of all the main characters in the Novel. The reason was my eldest daughter, she wanted to know what the others looked like, because I am currently reading this book to her. So I thought a collage of all of them would be cool. I was able to document the whole progress of sketching and drawing the final lines on my IGTV Channel. If you’d like to watch the progress, feel free to watch it on my instagram. (monia.baillieu) The highlights of…

Weekly update – The Last Unicorn

Happy Easter to all of you! I hope you all had a wonderful time! This week I worked on a character design for the book: The last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle. I am reading this book to my eldest daughter and she requested to know how Schmendrick the magician looked like. Or how I thought he’d looked like. Schmendrick is described as a wizard, that looks munch younger than his age and he has no beard. Which is often one of the reasons he is not taken seriously by others. I imagined him as tall and more of the goofy type. The illustration is colored with Aquarell colors and…

    Weekly update – Last Prompt

The last prompt of the #springawakeningmonth is finished. It is the last scene of the book „The secret Garden“ by Francis H. Burnett. Colin, Mary and Dickon are chasing each other in a race through the garden with Colin winning and almost landing in his Fathers arms. It is a beautiful scene in the book. (and Movie) It has been such fun to draw and paint these series for the secret garden. The proudest moment was when my eldest daughter recognized the paintings and said:“Mom, it’s Mary!“ I was reading the book to her in the last month, so she knew the book and the characters. Other than that my…

    Weekly update – going slow

I feel like I am repeating myself every week over and over. So I apologize in advance. Life is busy as ever but I am happy to have finished the prompt Sounds for the #springawakeningmonth event on instagram. This time, I illustrated Dickon from the Novel „the secret garden“ from Francis H. Burnett. This is my third illustration for this novel and I really enjoy making them. It is time consuming but it is somehow also very relaxing. I painted with Acryl and colored pencils and this time I even added aquarelle. Overall I want to try and include more texture to my work because I really miss visible lines…

    Weekly update – celebration

This weeks prompt for #springawakeningmonth is celebration. As you know, I do the prompts with the book „the secret garden“ by Francis H. Burnett in mind.My celebration picture is not as intense as the word might give away. I drew Mary finding the key to the secret garden. It was a magical moment in the book and a true celebration in itself. Because this was the turning point in Marys life in Mistelthwaite. The illustration is painted with acrylic paint and polychromo colored pencil on paper. Other than that my week has been quite busy as ever. I am still taking care of my significant other and our two little…

    The secret garden – Illustration

As I have mentioned before, I am joining the #springawakeningmonth on instagram. Each Sunday during march, there will be an illustration fitting the prompt that is given. Because it is about spring, I immediately thought of the book „The secret Garden“ by Frances H. Burnett. The first prompt is rainbow and I picked the moment at the beginning of the book. The start is quite gruesome. Mary Lennox is left alone in the house in India. Her parents disappear as does her nanny and all servants. She is left completely alone waiting for someone to remember her. Yet the only one who shows up is a snake. Turns out, as…
